There is strength in numbers, the more members we have involved, engaged, and prepared makes the process easier.  Below are the things you can do to be involved, engaged, and prepared no matter how much time you have:

What Can You Do?

1. Plugged In Member keeps informed and up to date on what’s going on during negotiations/the union by:

  • Attending meetings

  • Checking in on the http://1883.cupe.ca/

  • Checking in on the Mobilization Committee website “this one!”

  • Check in with the Union Bulletin Boards

2. Site Communicators act as an extension of the Mobilization Committee by helping the committee reach out to members at all locations.  Site Communicators share information provided by the mobilization committee to those at their worksite.

3.  Mobilization Committee Member join the committee to help coordinate and implement mobilization efforts.  Help communicate to the members on behalf of the executive, and coordinate activities to promote awareness of the bargaining process.  Help raise our awareness of members’ issues and concerns, by raising our member’s awareness of the bargaining process and key issues.

4.  Picket Captain, are volunteers, the front line organizers of the Union when on strike.

  • They are the focus of Solidarity for the members on the picket line and may be called upon to make decisions that affect all members in the case of an emergency.

  • Picket Captains are tasked with keeping attendance on the line so that our members can receive their strike pay and seeing that strike duties are shared fairly.

  • They ensure the safety of our members. They are responsible for helping to ensure our members understand the role of a picketer.

  • Picket activity is watched closely by the employer including, but not limited to: corporate security, supervisors, and the media.

  • Picket Captains relay information from the Executive to the members and the information from the members to the Executive. They are important in the maintaining the flow of information and communication during a strike.

We need volunteers for the following roles:

  • Site Communicators

  • Mobilization Committee Members

  • Picket Captains

The more volunteers the better. If you are interested, please use the form below to contact the committee.

Remember that all volunteers are employees - just like you - who have volunteered to take on a certain amount of responsibility.  It is important that we all recognize the work done by our members and treat each other with respect. The more you, as a member, are involved, the stronger the resolve of the Union will appear.  We have strength in numbers - In Solidarity We Stand!

Success! Message received. Someone will be in contact within 48 hours to acknowledge reciept of your application, and to talk about next steps!
